CI-4 is an API service category for heavy-duty four-stroke diesel engines, introduced for engines with exhaust gas recirculation. It sets tighter limits on soot handling, oxidation and deposits than earlier categories such as CF-4 and CH-4, and can be used where those older categories are specified.
