Which is better, hydraulic oil 32 or 46?
Neither is better in general — they suit different conditions. ISO 32 is thinner and flows more easily, which suits high-speed systems and colder operating temperatures. ISO 46 is thicker and holds its film better under heat and load, which is why it is the usual year-round choice for most industrial and mobile equipment in Indian ambient temperatures. Use the grade your equipment manufacturer specifies; where the manual gives a range, choose 46 for hotter conditions and 32 for colder ones.
Can I mix 32 and 46 hydraulic oil?
Mixing two anti-wear hydraulic oils of the same type will not damage the system, but it produces an intermediate viscosity that may fall outside what the pump was designed for, and it dilutes the additive package if the two oils come from different manufacturers. Treat it as an emergency top-up only. Wherever possible, top up with the same grade from the same supplier, and change the full charge rather than blending grades permanently.
Can I use ISO 46 instead of AW 46?
Not necessarily. ISO 46 describes only the viscosity grade — the oil's thickness at 40°C. AW 46 describes an ISO 46 oil that also carries an anti-wear additive package. A plain ISO 46 mineral oil without AW additives will not protect vanes, pistons and valves in a pressurised system. If your equipment calls for AW 46, use an anti-wear oil such as Unisol AW Hydro 46, not a straight ISO 46 grade.

Typical service life is 2,000 to 4,000 operating hours, but condition matters more than hours. Change the oil when it darkens, smells burnt, turns cloudy from water ingress, or when an oil analysis shows the additive package is depleted. Dusty sites, high operating temperatures and continuous duty all shorten the interval.
