Tractor Oil — UTTO and Tractor Engine Oils

Unisol tractor oils are manufactured in Rajkot, Gujarat by Satyam Petroleum and cover both halves of a tractor's lubrication needs. UTTO Wet Brake is a Universal Tractor Transmission Oil for transmissions, final drives, hydraulics and oil-immersed (wet) brakes — one fill for the back end, with anti-chatter braking performance. It is not an engine oil. For the engine, Unisol supplies Super 15W-40 and Premium 20W-40 heavy-duty grades built for long hours in the field. This is the distinction buyers most often ask about: UTTO covers everything except the engine, while STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) is a single oil that also lubricates the engine. Running engine oil in a wet-brake transmission can cause brake chatter, so the two should not be substituted. UTTO Wet Brake is available in 5 L, 10 L, 20 L and 26 L packs; the engine grades in 7.5 L, 8.5 L, 10 L, 15 L and 20 L.

Tractor Oil — FAQ

What is UTTO oil and how is it different from engine oil?

UTTO stands for Universal Tractor Transmission Oil. It is a single oil for a tractor's transmission, final drives, hydraulic system and oil-immersed wet brakes. It is not an engine oil. Tractor engines take a dedicated engine oil such as a 15W-40 or 20W-40, while UTTO handles the transmission and hydraulics, which is why most tractors need both.

What is the difference between UTTO and STOU?

STOU, or Super Tractor Oil Universal, is a single oil for the engine, transmission, hydraulics and wet brakes together. UTTO covers everything except the engine. STOU simplifies stock to one oil, while UTTO lets you match a higher-specification oil to the engine separately, which usually gives better engine protection and longer drain intervals. Unisol supplies UTTO plus dedicated tractor engine oils rather than a combined STOU grade.

Can I use 15W-40 engine oil in a tractor?

Yes, in the engine. A 15W-40 heavy-duty diesel engine oil such as Unisol Super suits most tractor engines. It must not be used in the transmission or hydraulic system, where a UTTO grade is required. Using engine oil in a wet-brake transmission can cause brake chatter and poor clutch performance.

What is the difference between 15W-40 and 20W-40 tractor engine oil?

The first number is the oil's cold-start viscosity: 15W flows more easily than 20W when the engine is cold, which helps on early winter starts in northern India. Both carry the same 40 hot-viscosity rating, so protection at operating temperature is comparable. Unisol Super is the 15W-40 grade and Unisol Premium the 20W-40. Follow the grade in your tractor's manual.

How often should tractor transmission oil be changed?

Most manufacturers specify every 800 to 1,000 operating hours, or once a season for lighter use. Change it sooner where the tractor works in heavy dust, wet paddy fields or continuous loader duty, and check the oil for water contamination after monsoon field work.
